Going through RecaPitulation withdrawal? Yeah, so are we. There wasn’t a hell of a lot of news toward the end of last week, or yesterday for that matter, and we’ve had our hands full with a million other things - contests, games and interview upon interview. But now we’ve officially run out of excuses. Without further ado, here’s a spic-’n'-span new edition of RecaPitulation:

Last week we published one of the first - if not the first - interviews Pelican have given for their new one, What We All Come to Need. Now we have a firm release date for the album, their first full one for Southern Lord: October 27. And if you’ve chewed off your fingernails in anticipation of the release, there’s even more good news: The Chicago instru-metalists just posted one of the tracks, “Strung Up From the Sky,” on their MySpace page. As frontman Laurent Lebec told us about the number: “Bryan [Herweg, bassist] wrote this one … dirgey bass line dominates for an early Cure vibe mixed with lots of heavy ambience. Think this one will surprise some … Bryan taking the lead on songs on this new album has really invigorated us.” …

One of the more intriguingly incongruent festival lineups of the year has just been announced, for Austin’s Fun Fun Fun Fest. Happening November 7-8, the throwdown will finally give the Jesus Lizard, Danzig, Cool Kids, Death, Crystal Castles and Of Montreal some shared memories. Weird that the Lizard are being billed above Danzig, but maybe not, considering Austin is David Yow’s quasi-hometown. Also on tap for the fest are Brian Posehn, Destroyer, Les Savy Fav, Russian Circles, Flipper, Torche, Fucked Up, Red Sparowes, Times New Viking, the Atlas Sound, No Age and … just buy us a bus ticket to Austin already, wouldja?. …

A friend of ours made us mighty jealous on Friday night. While we were shaking along to Los Campesinos! at the El Rey here in L.A., he was witnessing a considerably cooler show at the Black Cat in D.C. His text read as follows: “Just saw the Breeders. Current bassist’s GF is in labor, so Josephine flew in to play with them.” That current bassist would be Mando Lopez - but more importantly, the Josephine in question is the one with the last name Wiggs. The very early Breeder had rejoined the crew for a show in 2005 - part of 4AD’s 25th anniversary shindig - but hadn’t played with the band since then. After the D.C. show, she tagged along with the Deal sisters for shows in Pittsburgh and Columbus, Ohio. We’re struggling to remember the last time we wished we lived in either of those cities, but those shows do pique our envy. …

Hands-down, no-contest, don’t-try-to-dispute-us: Gogol Bordello put on one of the most entertaining rock shows you’ll ever see. Period. If you don’t believe us, grab a pencil and flip open your calendar - or hop on your iPhone or something - because New York’s beloved gypsy punks are about to prove their salt once again with yet another exhaustive tour. The band will be playing across the world - were talking not just the U.S. but also Canada, Eastern Europe and even Israel - from October 3 through December 20. Equally sweet, SideOneDummy are cranking out, on October 6, a CD/DVD package that is as colorful as Eugene Hutz’s circus crew. Live From Axis Mundi will be littered with unreleased session tracks, demos, an instrumental version of “Immigrant Punk,” BBC recordings and, oh, so much more. If you’re planning to see one of the shows, don’t forget to put on your purple pants. …

Aquarius Records, how we love thee. And how we love being on the same page with them. Like AR, we’ve had our eye on Wind’s Poem (P.W. Elverum and Sun), the new Mount Eerie record, which climbed into stores last week. The 31-year-old Phil Elverum went to the dark side a few years ago, marrying his electronic-based endeavor with black metal, and he’s kept the intrigue level high ever since. Also making the cut for Aquarius’ top three favorite records of late are “cold wave” band Soror Dolorosa’s Severance (Todestrieb) and ambient-drone act Velvet Cacoon’s two-CD Atropine (Full Moon Productions), which are both new to us. …

We’ve been keeping tabs on Spindrift, those psych-rockers who sound like they’ve done one too many tablets of LSD. Their newest nub of music, The Legend of God’s Gun (Tee Pee), came out in late July, and today they’re starting to sweat it out on the road with Dandy Warhols. Since we don’t have any party poppers lying around, we’ll celebrate the tour kickoff with a new Legend MP3 for free download:

Brace yourself for some a deluge of 3 Inches of Blood coverage in the coming weeks. So long as our interview and guest pass pan out, that is. If not, expect more of a drip instead. We’ve already talked a couple of times about the band’s upcoming album, Here Waits Thy Doom (September 8, Century Media). Sadly, we find it to be one of 3IOB’s weakest releases, but you can judge for yourself by listening to the opening track, “Battles and Brotherhood,” which was just unveiled on their MySpace page. Enemies of metal, your death is their reward. …

Holy flying fuckballs, Batman: The original Cranberries are getting back together. We’re talking Dolores O’Riordan and shit, yo. Their first tour in seven years is in the planning stages. Yum. Or … yum? We’ll let you decide whether we’re serious about this news item.
