The Mekons wowed us about two hours ago with a cozy, career-spanning performance a mile down the street, at McCabe’s Guitar Shop. The venue’s personalized atmosphere - with its guitar-lined walls and litany of music-lover memorabilia - could not have been better suited for a band that comes across as casually as the long-running British gang does.
And when we say “long-running,” we mean it. At 32 years old, the band was around before the Walkman.
Ringleader Jon Langford reminded us of the band’s impressive tenure via an illustration he gave us after the show, when we were kicking it with him and his bandmates in the venue’s pseudo-dressing room. He had scribbled the toon for the band’s merch table but was kind enough to contribute the picture to our ongoing “Shoebox” series.
The Mekons were pretty beat after the show, so we’re even more indebted to them for humoring us. We hope they get some rest before their gig tomorrow night at the Echo.
