Grizzly Bear, Health, Mission of Burma, Deerhunter, No Age and a splurge of other bands we’d rob a bank to see are on the docket for this year’s Pool Parties in Brooklyn. The shows are actually free, which is awesome, but we live in L.A., which sux. Fortunately we still have TV:
If today is Thursday - hell, any day of the week - you know RCRD LBL has some fresh downloads (or “freshies,” as we like to call them). Today’s highlight, at least in our book, is Crystal Castles‘ club-ready transformation of “Death” by White Lies. It’s like Lee Majors after he got his bionic powers: The previously expansive track is bigger, faster and stronger. …
Brooklyn Vegan has a tub of downloads by spazzy (and snazzy) trio Cryptacize, which is led by ex-Kill Rock Star Nedelle Torrisi; and tourmates Casiotone for the Painfully Alone (real name: Owen Ashworth). Cryptacize are hard to categorize - a gleeful train wreck of flat notes, nonsense melodies and gorgeous singing from Torrisi. Their second effort, Mythomania, streeted in April on Asthmatic Kitty. …
Aaron Turner must secretly be an octopus. He just tied the bow on a tour with his main project, Isis, and affiliate Mamiffer - our heads are still rattling from last week’s closing date in Hollywood - and now he’s ready to bust out another ensemble. The inaugural bounty from Greymachine - which also features, among others, industrial-doom deacon Justin Broadrick - will see the light of day on Turner’s own Hyrda Head come August 4. Snag the download for one of the tracks, “Vultures Descend,” right here. For those of you keeping score at home, Broadrick previously remixed two Isis songs, and his Jesu project has more or less called Hydra Head home throughout its tenure. Lastly, read our recent chat (well, the first part of it, anyway) with Turner, who revealed to us a near-road disaster Mamiffer dexterously avoided. …
Mind-melting metallers Job for a Cowboy love you, they really do. Today they’re streaming their second album, Ruination (Metal Blade, drops Tuesday), on their MySpace page. That’s right, the whole gosh-darn thing - even “Constitutional Masturbation” and “Regurgitated Disinformation,” which we particularly enjoy. You probably already get the drift, but the listen is pretty iconoclastic, with the band lashing out about political tumult in North Korea, Nubia and elsewhere. Oh yeah, and they’re not too crazy about U.S. torture policy, either. A slick album-art flipbook is available online too. …
Hey-oh, hey-oh, someone tell Angela and Mona: The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza is scraping the crust out of its eyes as it prepares for its third release, Danza III: A Series of Unfortunate Events. The self-described “metal/experimental/ghettotech” foursome out of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, don’t have an exact release date just yet for the album, which is in preproduction and will be their second entry in the Black Market Activities catalog. Unfamiliar with the dastardly Danza? Get a taste at their MySpace page, and don’t miss actor Danza attempting to clear up the titular confusion on his TV show:
And, finally, our image of the day, which we’re just going to let speak for itself:
