Jaws dropped left and right when the Silversun Pickups debuted at #7 on the Billboard 200 earlier this year, getting rid of 43,000 copies of their second album, Swoon (Dangerbird). But the little indie-rock band that could wasn’t always a big name - not even in their L.A. hometown.
Peep this press release from late 2003 for The Fold Compilation, a set that spotlighted the crème de la crème of bands who had performed at the Silverlake Lounge and the Derby in Silverlake. While there’s a ton of talent - Metric, Devendra Banhart, The Polyphonic Spree - the big push was the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. And the Pickups didn’t even get a mention beyond appearing tucked away on the track list.
Check out #14 on Disc 1, along the right side:
So if you’re just about to give up on your struggling band, don’t forget that everyone has to start somewhere: at the bottom.
